How to Keep Your Lawn Green Through Summer
The Michigan summer can bring heatwaves or heavy downpours — both challenging for lawns. Here’s how to keep your grass looking lush, even when the weather gets unpredictable.
1. Mow Smart
In summer, raise your mower blade a notch. Cutting too short can stress your lawn and make it prone to browning. Aim to mow little and often, especially during dry spells.
2. Water Deeply (But Not Daily)
When watering, go for a deep soak once or twice a week rather than a daily sprinkle. This encourages deep root growth and builds drought resistance.
3. Feed Your Lawn
Use a summer lawn feed rich in nitrogen to boost green growth. Apply early in the season and follow up again in mid-summer for best results.
4. Aerate to Breathe
Compacted lawns struggle to absorb water. Use a garden fork or aeration tool to spike your lawn and improve drainage and airflow.
5. Don’t Panic at Brown Patches
Lawns naturally go dormant in hot weather. If your grass turns brown, don’t worry — it will usually bounce back with the next rainfall.
Bonus Tip: Keep mower blades sharp to avoid tearing the grass and stressing your lawn.
